Scientific Vision Applications

At CTI, we have multiple developers with science PhDs developing advanced imaging systems and custom image analysis software. Our clients include numerous universities, foundations, medical device & pharmaceutical companies, and others, and our work has led to publication in scientific journals. For more details, see the example applications below. See also our Area Scanning Imaging System (ASIS) on our products page.

  • Adaptive Optics Microscope -CTI developed all the custom LabVIEW software for controlling a unique microscope which employs adaptive optics to enable orders of magnitude reduction in blurring in deep biological samples. The research behind this microscope was featured in Nature Methods, with CTI developer, Daniel Milkie, Ph.D. as one of the authors. Nature Methods Article Abstract

  • Crystal Finder - performs automated high speed imaging and discovery of crystals formed in hanging drops placed in Well Plates as part of the drug discovery process.

  • Particle Counting System - counts small drug-filled particles of various sizes suspended in a fluid enclosed in transparent drug vials.  Offers many advanced features including:
    • Automatic "Region of Interest" detection
    • Particle size rejection filters

  • CellSpotter™ Cell Detection System - collects, analyzes, and archives microscope images of specially prepared blood samples, which are then used to detect circulating caner cells.

  • CellTracks Data Acquisition - second generation high-speed image acquisition system for acquiring images of circulating cancer cells.

  • Bio-sample Biaxial Load Tester - investigates the mechanical properties of biological and synthetic tissues by stretching samples using a set of four in-plane stepper motors.  In this system, load cells monitor the forces applied to the sample, while an overhead camera tracks marker dots on the sample.

  • Birefringence Imager - system for acquiring and analyzing images of birefringent materials in 96 position well plates.  The system automatically controls and XY table, high resolution camera, light source, and dual polarizing wheels.

  • Confocal Microscope - CTI, along with researchers at the University of Pennsylvania developed a confocal microscope with two photon fluorescence capability.

  • Tablet Hole Inspection - Size and location of multiple hole patterns drilled into both sides of medicine tablets are inspected at a high speed on a conveyor belt.

  • Color Tablet Tracking - software allows for the tracking of the velocity and exposed area of colored tablets dispersed among white tablets to monitor the mixing process of tablets.

  • Thin Film Defect Detection identifies and quantifies defects in thin films.  The system utilizes a high-resolution camera, zoom lens, and XYZ motion control, which allows for imaging over an extended area and for auto-focus control.
